Serious question, my rice and beans cost came out to 71 cents a serving and I don't know if that's good
I actually sat down with a calculator after dinner and it came out to 71 cents a serving for a pot of black beans with rice, onions, and a can of diced tomatoes. That's 6 dinners for about $4.25 total, and I used the dried beans from the bulk bin at the Save A Lot on 5th. I know that sounds obvious to some of you, but I honestly thought I was already cooking cheap. What's the one swap that got your per plate cost under a buck?
71 cents is solid, but I want to know what you're counting. Did you add in the onion, the oil if you used any, and the gas or electric for simmering that pot for an hour plus? I ask because my own math got way less impressive once I started tracking the little stuff, like a $1.29 onion that only half goes in the pot, or the fact that dried beans take forever on my old stove. So what's your serving size too, like a cup of cooked rice plus beans or a bigger bowl? That number swings a lot depending on how hungry you are at 7pm.
