TIL my leftover chicken trick is actually dangerous

My buddy who works in food safety said keeping cooked chicken in the fridge for more than 3 days is a gamble, even if it smells fine. I've been eating week-old chicken from Sunday meal prep for years without issue, but now I'm wondering if I've just been lucky. Anyone else ever get sick from meal prep leftovers?

Yeah but come on, four or five days is a long shot. I've pushed chicken to five or six days plenty of times and never had a single problem. The three day rule sounds like something a food safety guy has to say so nobody sues him. Your body can handle a little bacteria unless you've got a weak stomach or something. I'll take my chances with the smell test over tossing perfectly good meat.

Man, I hear you. I used to be the same way with my leftovers, especially chicken. I kept thinking if it smelled okay and looked fine, it was good to go. But I actually got hit with a pretty nasty case of food poisoning a couple years back from some chicken that was maybe 4 or 5 days old. It wasn't fun at all, and it totally changed how I handle my meal prep now. I stick to that 3 day rule and just freeze whatever I don't plan to eat right away. It's way better than risking being stuck in the bathroom for a whole day.

Bro come on, 3 days is way too cautious. Smell test never failed me yet.
