Hot take: Booking a hostel private room isn't worth double the price
I spent $80 a night on a private room in Lisbon last spring thinking I'd get peace and quiet, but the walls were paper thin and I heard every snore anyway. The shared dorms at that same hostel were $30 and people actually stfu at midnight. Has anyone else found that private rooms in hostels are just a waste of cash?

Right? The private room thing is such a gamble. I did the same in Barcelona and the walls might as well been cardboard, I heard some guy's whole life story through them. At that point you're just paying extra for a slightly bigger bed and hoping nobody stumbles in drunk at 3am, which happens anyway in a hostel.

Earplugs and an eye mask are essential gear.

lunah12 knows what's up with the earplugs and eye mask, honestly that combo has saved me more times than I can count. I learned the hard way after a hostel in Prague where the street noise was brutal, plus a roommate who snored like a lawnmower. The eye mask is non-negotiable for me now, especially in those places where the curtains are basically see-through. People always laugh when I pull out my travel kit but then they're the ones begging to borrow it later (not that I share, my stuff is precious). A decent pair of earplugs can turn any noisy nightmare into a decent sleep, period.
