PSA: The envelope method turned my paycheck into a game
I was blowing $200 a month on takeout without realizing it... just grabbing food whenever I was lazy. So I started pulling $300 cash for groceries at the start of each week and putting it in a labeled envelope. Now when the envelope's empty, that's it - no more swiping cards for snacks. Has anyone else found that cash just feels more "real" than tapping your phone?

That envelope empty and you just stop eating thing would get me into trouble fast. I tried the cash method once and ended up borrowing from my gas envelope to buy barbecue, then had to walk to work for two days. Turns out hunger makes me real creative with budgeting, just not the good kind of creative.

My sister told me about this method six months ago and I honestly thought it sounded like something from a retirement home newsletter. But then I looked back at my bank statements and saw I was dropping $450 a month on fast food and coffee runs without even tasting most of it. So I tried it with my fun money envelope and put $80 cash in there for the month. I ran out after three weeks and something clicked in my brain, I actually had to think before grabbing a pastry at the gas station. I still keep my regular bills on autopay but for the spending categories, having actual paper money is making a real difference.
