The $5 notebook habit that finally stuck after 4 failed attempts

I kept buying expensive dot grid journals and then abandoning them after two weeks... felt like such a waste. Last month I grabbed a $5 composition book from the grocery store and tried a super minimal setup, just a monthly log and a daily task list. No collections, no trackers, just what I actually needed for that day. It's been 6 weeks now and I actually look forward to opening it in the morning. Has anyone else found that going simpler made bullet journaling actually work for them?

The real trap nobody talks about is that expensive notebooks make you treat your system like a museum instead of a tool. You end up curating a display piece instead of actually managing your life. I noticed my cheap notebook gets scribbled on, folded, coffee stained, and that's when it actually started being useful. The fancy ones had me so worried about messing up the first page that I'd just buy another one and start over. It's like the $2 composition book broke the perfectionism spell completely. Now I use the back cover for grocery lists and nobody cares.

The simple setup is what clicked for me too, specifically dropping collections. I used to spend a whole hour (no joke) making a fancy habit tracker with color codes and everything. Then I'd forget to fill it in after day three. Now it's just today's tasks on the left page and a tiny calendar on the right. No wasted pages, no pressure. The grocery store notebook is genius, by the way - cheaper paper means I don't feel bad about crossing out mistakes or just ripping out a page if I mess up.

The cheap notebook thing is a total game changer. I used to buy those expensive leather bound ones and then feel like I had to fill every single page perfectly. Now I grab the dollar store composition books and it's completely freeing. I rip out pages all the time when I change my mind about a layout or just mess up a date. The whole color coded habit tracker thing is a trap too. I spent three days making a massive monthly tracker with different colored pens for water intake and exercise. Never touched it after week one. Now I just have a daily to do list with maybe three things on it. Simple is definitely the way to go.
