I used to think expensive chef knives were a waste until my $20 one slipped and I needed 6 stitches
Been using the same cheap knife block set I got at target for 8 years. Last month I was deboning a chicken and the handle literally slid off the blade. 6 stitches and a tetanus shot later. My buddy let me use his victorinox for a week and yeah I get it now. The grip alone is worth it. Has anyone else had a knife fail like that or am I just unlucky?

Knives are weird man. I had this ceramic one from ikea for years, thought it was great. Cut a bell pepper one day and a chunk of the blade just snapped off. Flew across the kitchen and landed in the sink. No injuries but I stood there staring at it for a solid minute like what just happened. My brother who cooks professionally laughed at me and gave me one of his old wusthofs. Night and day difference. Never going back to those discount knives. The balance alone makes it safer even though it seems backwards spending more.

A chunk of the blade just flew off into the sink? Man, that's wild. I can't imagine standing there with a half-broken knife and a bell pepper wondering how that even happens. My grandma had the same cheap set for like forty years and nothing ever exploded on her.
