That collector who handed me a beat-up Pentax Spotmatic and said "fix this without checking the serial number first" really got under my skin.

Took me 2 hours to realize it was a prototype model from a 1965 trade show in Chicago with non-standard threads on the shutter release, and I had to undo all my work and start over with the right parts.

The 1965 Chicago trade show prototypes had those odd left-hand threads on the shutter release that look standard but aren't. A good rule I've picked up is to always check the serial number against known production runs before taking anything apart. It saves you from having to backtrack and source the wrong parts.

Whoa wait, left-hand threads on the shutter release? That's wild, I didn't know they messed with that on the prototypes. I've seen some weird stuff from that era but that's a new one to me.

Back in the 80s I almost lost a thumb trying to force a cannon lens the wrong way.
