Thinking about how we used to pack for a week in the woods

Back in the 90s, my dad and I would just throw a heavy canvas tent and some wool blankets in the truck. Now I spend an hour weighing my pack, trying to get it under 25 pounds with a tiny tent and a quilt. Does anyone else miss the simple, heavy gear sometimes?

My uncle's old camping setup was basically a canvas sack and a cast iron skillet. There's something to be said for gear that just works without needing a spreadsheet to plan it. I'd take that simple weight over ultralight fuss any day.

That old setup sounds like a heavy pain to carry anywhere.

Saw a blog post calling it "comfort weight" gear.
