My professor gave us the choice to either present our final project or write a 20-page paper, and I chose the presentation to avoid a confrontation about my topic's sources.
Has anyone else picked the 'safer' academic option lately just to dodge a potential protest or complaint?

Doesn't this happen with small talk all the time? You avoid bringing up politics or the news just to keep a conversation smooth, so you never really connect. It feels like we're training ourselves to stick to surface level stuff everywhere.

That's a really smart move to avoid the headache! It makes me wonder, though, how often we're changing our actual learning path just to steer clear of conflict. Like @owens.anthony said, taking the easy win can be the smart play, but does it ever backfire later? Are we missing out on getting better at defending our ideas by always picking the safe route? Feels like the system sometimes rewards avoiding trouble over digging into tough topics.

Totally get that. Last semester I swapped a risky essay topic for a book report just to avoid office hours drama. Sometimes the easy win is the smart move.
