Question about that "I turned 40" birthday meme that went around last month

I hit 1,000 followers exactly last week and suddenly every joke I used to laugh at about millennials getting old felt like it was aimed right at me, how do you guys decide what's still funny when you're the target now?

Wait so you laughed at your dad getting butt hurt about "over the hill" stuff and now you're literally the same age as the memes? That's wild how fast that flips on you. I caught myself googling "best reading glasses for computer" last week and almost threw my phone across the room because I used to make fun of my aunt for that exact thing. It's like one day you're on the outside looking in, and the next you're the meme.

My 50 year old neighbor sent me that meme and I thought it was just dumb at first. But last week I realized I'm actually the same age as the people in all those jokes now. I used to roll my eyes at my dad getting sensitive about "over the hill" stuff, but now I get it. The turning point for me was when I caught myself laughing at a TikTok about forgetting why you walked into a room, then stopped because I knew it was my life now. Honestly, once I admitted I was the target, those jokes got funnier because they're true. You just have to lean into it and not take yourself so seriously.

Hold on, I gotta push back a little on this whole 'lean into it' thing. In my experience, once you start laughing at those 'forget why you walked into a room' jokes, you're basically giving yourself permission to let your brain go. I mean, yeah, it happens to everyone sometimes, but if you just joke about it instead of doing something about it, you might be missing the chance to actually improve your memory. My dad used to laugh off every little thing he forgot, and now he can't remember what he had for breakfast most days. I'm not saying panic, but maybe don't make a whole identity out of being forgetful. Your mileage may vary, but I think there's a fine line between not taking yourself seriously and just accepting decline as inevitable.
