Went to a comedy club in Nashville last Friday... half the crowd walked out during a Holocaust joke
Saw two camps in the audience. Old timers laughing their heads off. College kids grabbing their coats. Comics looked confused. Is that joke dead or are we just too divided now? What do you think - can we still laugh at that stuff?

Read a piece last week about how younger crowds have zero tolerance for anything that could punch down, even in comedy. Old school guys think everything should still be fair game.

Usually toss in a self deprecating joke right after so they know I'm not above getting roasted too.

oh man, I actually saw a show last month where a comic was roasting the front row and this younger guy in the audience got super defensive about a harmless joke about his haircut. it was awkward. the thing that worked for me in similar situations is I try to make it clear I'm laughing WITH people, not AT them. like if I'm joking about something specific, I'll add a quick "I do this too" or "we're all guilty" so nobody feels singled out. it's not about censoring yourself, just picking your spots better.
