Hot take: that whole 'just be yourself' advice got me cancelled on Twitter
I posted a joke about my shift at the warehouse where a pallet fell over and I said the boxes looked like a bunch of dominoes. Someone chimed in saying it was offensive to compare things to games or something and before I knew it I had 50 replies calling me out. The trick I found was just leaning into the mess and explaining the literal context instead of apologizing right away. After 2 days of back and forth I finally just said 'look it was a Tuesday at 3pm and a forklift driver sneezed' and that killed the whole thread. People want a story not a scripted apology. Has anyone else tried just being boringly honest instead of doing the whole groveling thing?

Sounds like a whole lot of unnecessary drama over a forklift sneezing.

One time at a retail job I had, a guy on a ladder dropped a single box of canned soup and it hit a sprinkler head. Sprinkler went off, flooded half the back room, and the whole store had to close for two days. All over someone trying to reach too far for chicken noodle. So yeah @jessej23, I feel you on the drama thing. Never seen a forklift sneeze though, that's a new one for me.

Jesse that's pretty much what it was, just people with too much time on their hands. That dominoes comparison wasn't even a metaphor or anything, just a literal observation about boxes falling.

Friend of mine worked at a warehouse where a guy sneezed near a stack of boxes and sent the whole row down like dominos. Turned into this huge thing with supervisors and paperwork and a safety meeting the next day. @nancyjones you nailed it, people with too much time and a forklift that backfired once and they turned it into a legend. Jesse's right too, unnecessary drama over a sneeze and some cardboard. Just funny how things spiral out of control.
