Just read about a tourist fired over Costa Rica comments. Deserved or a free speech problem? Your take?

It's wild how many people forget their work persona exists online now. I've seen coworkers get in trouble for complaining about clients on their personal Facebook, even with strict privacy settings. Companies seem to panic over anything that could possibly look bad and just cut ties. The line between your own time and being a brand rep for your job is totally blurred.

Exactly, and like adams.uma said, it's just not worth the risk anymore lol.

Yeah, and that panic to cut ties means it's not just about your current job anymore. It's about any future job that does a quick search and sees you publicly trashing a place or a client. Your online history becomes this permanent record that can tank chances before you even get an interview. So it's less about free speech and more about personal risk management now. You have to assume anything you put online is tied to your ability to earn a living.

But where's the line, really? @amy_craig28 makes a good point about complaining about clients privately, but this was a tourist trashing a whole country publicly. If your name and job are easy to find, is that just free speech or does your employer have a right to worry you'll scare off future business?
