My cousin told me to just ignore the old tweet drama, but it blew up anyway

He said, 'It's from 2012, no one cares,' so I didn't delete it or make a statement. A week later, someone dug it up and posted it with the caption 'look at this guy.' My mentions were a mess for two days straight. Has anyone else had a situation where trying to ignore it just made things worse?

My buddy had an old forum post surface where he'd argued about some band. He figured it was buried. Someone made a video about it, stitching his words with clips of the band's worst performances. It went viral in his small circle. He said ignoring it was like watching a car crash in slow motion.

Ignoring old internet stuff is basically hoping no one has a shovel. Your cousin gave you bad advice, because the internet never forgets and someone always has time to dig. It's less about the content and more about the social media cycle needing something to chew on for a day. A quick, boring apology when it first comes up usually kills the fun for people trying to start drama.

Damn, @lily57 is right, that slow-motion car crash feeling is the worst.
