Learned a tricky dovetail trick from an old timer in Memphis

I was working on a drawer repair last Tuesday and this retired carpenter walked by my shop. He showed me how to mark the tails with a knife instead of a pencil, cut way cleaner joints that way. Has anyone else tried that method?

Wait, he wasn't using a knife for the dovetails and a pencil for the drywall tape?

Guilty of thinking a caulk gun was for advanced baking until last year, but hey, at least I'm not the only one confusing tools with kitchen utensils.
