A weird squeak in a hallway took me three hours to find

I put in a plush carpet in a house in Oak Park last week. The homeowner called me back the next day saying there was a loud squeak in the main hallway. I figured it was a simple tack strip issue. I went back, pulled up the carpet, and checked everything. It turned out to be a single, tiny piece of drywall debris under the pad, right over a floorboard seam. I must have walked over that spot a dozen times before I heard it. Has anyone else had a noise problem that came from something totally unexpected like that?

Man, that is the worst. It's always the smallest thing that makes the biggest noise. I had a squeak in my own living room floor for months. I was sure it was a loose board or a nail pop. I finally tore into it and found a single, dried-up pea from who knows when rolling around in the subfloor gap. It must have fallen through a crack years ago. The relief of finding it was huge, but losing an afternoon to a pea was annoying.

Oak Park has old houses where you expect real problems, not just a speck of dust.
