Old carpet installer I worked with taught me more in one day than my boss did in a year
I was helping this guy named Jerry on a job in an old house out in Portland last month. He showed me how to feel for floor dips with just the back of his hand instead of using a straight edge every time. Said something like 'your hands got more sense than any tool if you pay attention.' Then he spent 15 minutes showing me how to stretch a seam so it doesn't pop later. Has anyone else had a mentor like that or am I just lucky?

Wait, are we sure Jerry was actually teaching you anything useful or just giving you old timer wisdom that doesn't hold up? I've worked with a bunch of guys like that and half the time their "tricks" are just shortcuts that cause problems later. Feeling for floor dips with your hand sounds fast but a straight edge is way more accurate, especially on wood subfloors where even a small hump will mess up your tile or LVP seam. The seam stretching thing is legit if done right but I've seen old school guys overstretch and blow out the material too. Not saying Jerry was wrong, just saying those old methods aren't always better than modern tools.

And honestly, the real thing nobody's talking about is how that kind of hands-on teaching builds confidence way faster than any YouTube tutorial or manufacturer manual ever could. Jerry showing you the "why" behind the trick is what sticks, not just the shortcut itself.
