PSA: That new seaming tape from the hardware store melted on me mid-job

I picked up a roll of that cheap seaming tape from the Ace Hardware in Omaha last Tuesday because my usual supplier was out. Figured it'd be fine for a quick bedroom install. But after I ironed the seam, the tape just bubbled up and turned into a gooey mess. Had to rip out 12 feet of carpet and redo the whole thing, cost me 3 extra hours and a pissed-off customer. Anyone else run into bad tape ruining a job lately?

Did you check what kind of backing the carpet had? I ran into something similar last month and it turned out the cheap tape wasn't meant for the jute backing on that particular roll of carpet. Some of that budget tape only works with synthetic backing and just melts on natural fibers. Might be worth checking the carpet label before grabbing the iron next time.

Did you let the glue cure long enough? I had the same headache with a batch of tape last fall, left it sit for 20 minutes then ironed and it held perfect. Now I always tack a little test strip before laying the whole seam.

Yup, test strips save a lot of headaches.
