That summer I used a butter knife to trim carpet edges

Back in 2018 I was working a basement job in Overland Park and forgot my trim knife. Owner handed me a butter knife from the kitchen. I laughed but tried it anyway. Worked okay for some straight cuts. Now I carry three spare knives in my truck. Who else has made do with weird tools on site?

Oh man, that butter knife story is gold lol. I've been there but with a flathead screwdriver trying to pry up a stubborn piece of laminate flooring because I couldn't find my pry bar anywhere. It actually worked better than I expected for getting under the edge, but I definitely scratched up the subfloor a bit. Now I keep a whole junk drawer of random tools in my van just in case, you never know what'll save the day when your real gear is buried somewhere.

Ha, yeah the junk drawer in the van is a lifesaver honestly. I've got a whole bag of random allen wrenches and old hardware that def shouldn't be used as tools but somehow always come in clutch.

Gotta push back a little here. Desperate times call for desperate measures, sure, but using the wrong tool is how you end up with a crooked cut or a busted blade that could slip. @allen.iris I get that flathead on laminate worked in a pinch, but that's a good way to mar the surface or even chip the edge if you're not careful. A butter knife on carpet is one thing, but prying with a screwdriver on something that's supposed to snap cleanly is playing with fire. Always better to spend two minutes finding the right tool than an hour fixing a mistake from the wrong one.

Ngl, a flathead screwdriver on laminate? @allen.iris that’s honestly terrifying.
