Overheard a line cook say something so dumb it made me rethink my whole mise

I was at this spot in Cleveland last week grabbing a late bite, and I heard one of the line cooks tell the new guy, 'You don't need to taste the sauce if you just follow the recipe.' I almost choked on my water. Like, buddy, recipes are just suggestions until your tongue confirms it's not garbage, right? Has anyone else run into cooks who refuse to taste things?

Whoa, hold up. I mean yeah, tasting is important and all, but is it really that serious? Like, the guy is a line cook at some random spot in Cleveland, not a Michelin star chef. If the recipe is solid and he's been making it the same way for years, maybe he just trusts his process. Not everyone needs to taste every batch to know it's fine. Some people are just really good at following instructions and it comes out the same every time. Honestly it sounds like a normal thing an overworked cook would say to a newbie, not some huge red flag. People online get so dramatic about stuff like this.

Right, because nothing says "trust the process" like a line cook who's been making the same thing for years and has probably had a few off nights where the salt shaker was a little heavy. I'm sure his regulars would love to hear "the recipe says a pinch, so it's fine" when their soup tastes like a salt lick. But sure, let's all just assume his hands are calibrated by the gods of Cleveland cuisine. It's not dramatic, it's just basic common sense. You know, like checking your own work before you serve it to someone.

Follow the recipe" - how do you know it still tastes right without trying it?
