The immersion blender I ignored for years finally won me over

I used to think immersion blenders were just a gimmick for people who didn't want to clean a real blender. But last winter at a busy brunch service, our main blender died fifteen minutes before service. I grabbed the old stick blender from the back, and within 30 seconds I had a batch of tomato soup smooth as silk right in the pot. Now I use it for everything from hollandaise to pureeing squash, and I feel dumb for avoiding it so long. Anybody else have a piece of gear they resisted until they finally caved?

Funny how you gotta fail first to even try the simple stuff, right?

I feel dumb for avoiding it so long" - that basically sums up my life in a kitchen. I was the same way with microplanes. Thought they were a waste of money compared to a box grater. Finally broke down and bought one for zesting lemons, and now I use it for garlic and ginger and hard cheeses too. @irisowens gets it - you gotta fail first. But what specific dish finally forced you to grab that stick blender? Was it the soup or something else that sealed the deal?

Was the same way... kept using a potato masher like a stubborn mule until I tried making roasted red pepper soup and ended up with stringy chunks everywhere. That's when I finally caved and realized I was just making things harder for no reason.
