Bought a 1980s IBM Model M keyboard at a garage sale for $5
My uncle told me last year that old keyboards are junk and I should just get a modern wireless one for my desktop setup. I cleaned the Model M up with dish soap and a toothbrush, and now it clicks better than any new keyboard I've tried. Has anyone else had a relative give you bad advice about retro tech that you ignored?

Did it feel amazing proving him wrong with that click-clack? My dad told me CRT monitors were a waste of space so I threw out a Sony Trinitron, still kicking myself.

You mentioned "who doesn't miss that sound" and honestly I'm a little on the other side of that one. That clicky clack was loud and annoying in a quiet room, especially if you were trying to watch something or listen to music. And as for building character, I'm not sure nostalgia for bad posture and eye strain counts. Trinitrons were great for their time but that weight was a real pain to move around. I think we can appreciate what they did without pretending they were perfect.

That Trinitron story hurts, I feel your pain. My own uncle told me to toss a box of old game cartridges because "nobody plays those anymore" - turned out to be a complete set of early Final Fantasy games. What makes relatives so QUICK to dismiss old tech as worthless? Do they just not remember how well built that stuff was compared to the plastic crap we get now?
