I used to drive everywhere in Portland, now I bike most days

I mean, I got a new job downtown about a year ago and the parking was like $15 a day, so I started biking the 3 miles instead. It saves me money and I feel way less guilty about adding to traffic and fumes. Has anyone else made a switch like that and found it easier than they thought?

Hold on, let me play devil's advocate like you said. Lots of folks in Portland totally rely on their cars for getting around, and if your commute is longer, has hills, or you've got kids to drop off, biking isn't just a simple math problem the way @phoenix573 might think. Your mileage may vary a ton, but that $15 parking actually makes the car way more expensive compared to gas, which most people already pay for.

That parking cost is a real tipping point for a lot of people. It turns a chore into a simple math problem where biking wins. The switch feels huge until you do it a few times and realize it's just normal.

What's the actual cost that made it click for you? Like was it a daily rate hitting a certain number, or just seeing the monthly total add up?

Remember when gas hit five bucks a gallon? That was my final push. I went from driving my old truck to a cheap used bike for my short commute. My wallet felt better in a week, and I wasn't sitting in that awful morning traffic anymore. It just became the new normal way to get to work.
