Can we talk about how I used to dump sugar packets into my drip coffee like it was nothing
Now I weigh out 15 grams of beans, dial in my grinder to a 14 setting, and pour water at exactly 205 degrees just to get the same caffeine hit - when did I turn into this person, and does anyone else miss just drinking coffee instead of engineering it?

15 grams of beans and 205 degree water and I bet you're still getting the same caffeine as you would from a gas station cup. That grinder setting sounds like you had to calibrate it with a spreadsheet. I stopped weighing my beans after I realized I was spending more time measuring than actually drinking the coffee.

Drew, you're probably right. I've got a notebook full of extraction times and water temperatures that looks like a science project. Meanwhile my neighbor uses a pre-ground can from the grocery store and seems just as awake. I finally switched to a pour-over method that takes 4 minutes start to finish and I haven't noticed a bit of difference in my morning jolt.

Ha, that's exactly how my buddy Dave was. He had this whole ritual with a timer and scale and would get annoyed if his pour took more than 3 minutes. Then he left his gear at a hotel and used a Mr. Coffee for a week, said he felt no different and hasn't touched his fancy setup since.
