Hot take: my dad was wrong about pre-ground coffee
He told me for years that grinding beans fresh was a waste of money and you couldn't taste the difference anyway. Last month I finally bought a $30 burr grinder and made a cup with beans I ground myself, and the flavor was so much brighter I actually laughed. Has anyone else had a family member swear by old coffee habits that turned out to be totally off?

Man, your dad and my mom must have gone to the same school of bad coffee advice. She swore by that pre-ground Folgers from a can for decades. Told me fresh grinding was just a fancy hobby for snobs. Finally got a cheap hand grinder and some decent beans last year, and it was like tasting coffee for the first time. The difference in the smell alone was enough to convince me. She still won't admit it, but she's asked me to grind some beans for her a few times now.

@samflores your mom's not entirely wrong about one thing. Pre-ground can work if you use it fast enough. But fresh grinding changes the whole game. The smell alone proves it. She might not admit it but she's coming around. That's how it goes with old habits.

@samflores Wait isn't Folgers pre-ground already? Thought that's what you were getting fresh.
