My cheap cardboard trick saved my favorite comics from ruin

I had a bunch of my early Batman comics stored in a basement corner, and the pages were starting to curl and feel damp. I knew I needed to do something fast before they got worse. At first, I thought about buying those special comic boxes, but they were too expensive for me right now. Then I remembered seeing someone use cardboard backings, so I cut up some old delivery boxes to fit behind each comic. I also wrapped them in plastic bags I had lying around to keep out moisture. After a week in a cooler, drier spot, they look almost new and lay perfectly flat. It's such a relief to have fixed this without spending a dime. I'm just glad my collection is safe now.

Nice save using stuff you already had.

But what really made it a save in your eyes... I mean, using stuff you already had is one thing, but was it about avoiding a trip to the store or just being clever? Sometimes that approach can backfire if the stuff isn't right for the job... I'm curious what the situation was that made it work so well. Did you have to improvise a lot, or was it a perfect match? Just wondering how you judge when to use what's on hand versus getting something new.

Yeah, the "perfect match" part is key. My buddy's sink sprayer hose burst last week. He cut the bad section out and used a random brass connector from an old ice maker line he had in a junk drawer. Was it the exact part? No, but it clamped on tight and saved him a huge leak until the new hose arrived. Sometimes the stuff on hand is just close enough to get you out of a real pinch.
