inWarning: I used to think any old potting soil was fine for my indoor plants
That's a perfect example of how the default option is often just the cheapest one for the store, not the best one for the job. You see it with everything from car oil to computer parts. People stick with the basic thing that "works" and miss out on how much better it could be with a little extra effort. It makes you wonder what else we're all putting up with that's just okay, not good.

inBack in 2010 I thought those new load moment indicators were just a crutch
Yeah that "second set of eyes" thing is dead on. I felt the same about backup cameras on delivery trucks. Thought it was for people who couldn't turn their heads. Then I had a kid's bike come out of nowhere behind me in a driveway. The camera caught it in the corner of the screen before I saw anything in the mirrors. Now I check that screen every single time I put it in reverse. It just gives you that extra bit of warning you sometimes need.

inMy prized Monstera in Austin got a bad case of thrips and I almost lost it
Wait, is it that big of a deal? I just use regular sunscreen.

inI found out our local foundry used to pour a specific alloy for ship propellers back in the 50s
Found something like that at my old shop too. They had photos of guys making huge steel gears for mining equipment in the 40s. Totally different from the auto parts they do now. Makes you wonder where all that old tooling ended up.

inSpent $400 on a fancy gutter guard system that clogged in two months
Switched to the solid snap-on covers and they've been great. The junk just slides right off.
