Thought those expensive omnibus editions were a waste... until I borrowed one
I used to laugh at guys dropping $100 on a single hardcover comic collection. Figured digital or trades were plenty good enough. Then a buddy loaned me his Absolute Batman: Hush edition last month, the big oversized one. The paper quality and how the art just pops at that size blew my mind, especially on the double page spreads. I still think $75 is a lot for a book, but I get the appeal now after actually holding one. Anybody else get converted after handling a premium edition in person?

Same here. Seeing the art at that size changes everything.

Yeah, "seeing the art at that size changes everything" if you've got money burning a hole in your pocket. But let's be real, most of those omnibuses are just a marketing trick to get you to pay triple for the same story with slightly bigger gutters. I'd rather spend that seventy five bucks on three or four full trade paperbacks that I can actually read on the bus without straining my wrist.

See I gotta disagree a little. I picked up the Planetary omnibus last year and yeah it's heavy, but the two page spreads in that thing are insane. The little details in the background art would be totally lost in a standard trade. Not every story needs that treatment, but for something like JH Williams III's layouts or a big event like Age of Apocalypse? It genuinely changes how you read the book.
