TIL a simple way to get my kid into comics without the big price tag

My 8 year old kept asking about my old comics but I was scared he'd wreck them. I didn't want to spend a ton on new floppies he might not even like. So last month, I grabbed a cheap, used trade paperback of a classic Spider-Man story from a local shop for like six bucks. It was a beat up copy of 'Kraven's Last Hunt'. We read a few pages each night. He got hooked on the story, not just the pictures, and the book could take the wear. Now he asks to read more than watch TV. What's a good, solid trade for a kid who liked that darker story but isn't ready for full adult stuff yet?

What about the original 'Dark Phoenix Saga'? It has that serious tone but stays in the classic X-Men world. My nephew got into it around that age and it held up fine. The collected edition is usually pretty cheap too.

Dark Phoenix is actually pretty heavy for a kid, the whole suicide ending hits different now. It's still a great story but maybe not the best intro for a younger reader. There are better starting points that ease into the serious stuff.

My buddy's kid read it and had nightmares for a week, so maybe start with something lighter.
