Found a trick for leveling on uneven ground without a transit
Spent two hours yesterday trying to get my crane level on a site that looked like a moonscape, then the old foreman walks over and shows me to use stacked 2x6 cribbing under the outrigger pads instead of wasting time with gravel. Has anyone else tried this on really bad sites or am I just late to the party?

Three tries with the gravel trick before I figured out cribbing was a thing.

Isn't it funny how we all assume the easy fix will work until we realize we've been missing some basic trick? @claire_grant34 That's one of those things that makes you wonder what other simple solutions are hiding in plain sight every day.

Three tries on the gravel trick? Man that hurts me just reading it. I can't believe you wasted that much time and material when a few chunks of wood would have saved your back and your schedule. Cribbing is such a basic thing but nobody teaches it anymore, you just have to pick it up from some salty old timer who's been doing it since the 70s.
You must have been ready to throw that shovel across the site after the second time. I get that it's one of those things that seems too simple to work but it beats hauling gravel around every time.
