Paid a $200 fee to get a late payment removed from my credit report

Missed a card payment last year. Got hit with a late mark. Hurt my score bad. Called the card company, offered to pay a fee to have it removed. Cost me $200. They agreed and reported it as on time. Score bounced back 40 points in a month. Anyone know if this is a common deal or did I just get lucky?

The part about it being a "goodwill adjustment for a first time slip up" is killing me. I mean, my bank's goodwill ended the second they processed the late fee. Now it's just regular old "pay-us-will" adjustments. Two hundred bucks to pretend a bill never happened? That's not customer service, that's a side hustle they forgot to tell us about.

Wait, they let you PAY to fix it? That's wild. I've only ever heard of goodwill adjustments for a first time slip up. Two hundred bucks is a lot, but I guess if your score jumped that much it was worth it. Never knew that was an option.
