A sysadmin at a coffee shop changed how I handle public WiFi
I was at a Starbucks in Austin last week and this older guy saw me logging into my bank on their free network. He just leaned over and said, 'You know that's how people get their accounts drained, right?' Then he showed me how he uses a travel router with a VPN built in for exactly that reason. I'd never even thought about how easy it is to spoof a coffee shop network... makes me wonder what else I'm missing. Has anyone else run into a random stranger who gave them a wake-up call about their online habits?

Nobody locks their car doors in a small town until something gets stolen" - that's basically it. People think their bank's security is bulletproof until someone sniffs their session cookie and drains their account. Better to just use a VPN on public WiFi, end of story.

I mean, the_tessa is right about banks having security layers, but it feels like people sleep on how easy it is to set up a fake network with the same name in public spots. Kinda like how nobody locks their car doors in a small town until something gets stolen.

I mean, isn't that kind of overblown? Most public WiFi these days uses encryption, and banks have their own security layers too.
