Spent 4 hours trying to prove a video of my mayor was fake before I found the original clip from a 2018 news segment.

What's the fastest way you guys check if something is a deepfake before you start digging for hours?

Man, that sounds like a brutal afternoon right there. The first thing I always do is check the source's other posts, like, what else are they sharing? Then I look for weird blurring around the mouth or eyes, that's usually a giveaway. Sometimes just running a quick reverse image search on a still frame can save you a ton of time.

I used to just watch a video and take it at face value. After getting burned by a fake clip of a football player last year, I started checking the upload date like jana881 said. It's saved me from sharing so much dumb stuff.

My buddy Dave got fooled by a fake clip of a local weatherman last month. He just checks the video's upload date against the events it shows now, catches a lot of fakes that way.
