Thinking about running biodiesel in my old Duramax. Heard mixed things on cold weather performance.

I have a 2005 Duramax that I use for towing. Considering switching to B20 biodiesel to cut down on emissions. But I'm concerned about how it handles in winter. Any tips from mechanics who've made the switch?

2005 was when GM first said biodiesel was okay, so I'm really surprised @kai_king98 thinks it's risky for that year. I mean, the cold gelling stories are usually from people using summer blends in winter. My neighbor uses B20 in his farm truck and just adds anti-gel below freezing, never had a tow trip fail. Maybe it's just me but with a good fuel filter and some planning, winter biodiesel works fine.

My buddy's 2005 ran B20 for years, just swapped filters more often, so what's the real risk?

Wait, you're thinking of running biodiesel in a 2005? I mean, maybe it's just me but that seems risky for an engine that old. The cold weather thing is real, biodiesel can gel up way easier than regular diesel. I've heard stories of totally clogged fuel filters when it gets cold. For a tow rig, I'd be way too nervous about getting stuck somewhere. Honestly, I'd just stick with the normal stuff in winter.

My '06 Duramax ran B20 with winter additive just fine. Never had a gelling issue even in deep cold.
