That guy on the beach in Mexico changed how I work forever

Met this older dude at a co-working spot in Playa del Carmen last year. He told me straight up I was wasting money hopping cafes every day instead of just renting a cheap room with a desk. Dude said he spent $150 a month on a studio with solid wifi and never left. Honestly changed my whole setup since then, I spend way less and get more done. Anyone else ditched the coffee shop hustle for a simple room?

@the_terry hits on something real about the hermit life, but I lived in a $200 room in El Salvador for a month and met my neighbor because his dog kept coming through my open door.

$150 a month in Playa del Carmen sounds way too cheap for a room with solid wifi, that place is getting expensive now. I just feel like working alone in a tiny room kills your creativity and network, you miss out on all the random connections and energy from a shared space. People act like saving a few bucks is worth turning into a hermit, but half the reason you go remote is to actually be around other humans.

Yeah but "half the reason you go remote is to actually be around other humans" is kind of missing the point for a lot of people. I mean, some of us went remote specifically to get away from forced social stuff and focus on work without distractions. Like, I get that coworking spaces can be good for networking but not everyone needs that constant buzz to be creative. Sometimes a cheap room with good wifi is exactly what you need to lock in and get stuff done without small talk eating up your morning. Not saying one is better than the other, just that it depends on what you're actually trying to do.
