Old router firmware bit me hard last Tuesday

I hadn't updated my Netgear R7000 firmware in like 3 years. Finally got a notification from my ISP saying my connection was part of a botnet attack. Spent 4 hours flashing DD-WRT onto it and now I'm actually checking for updates every month. Anyone else forget about router updates until something bad happens?

And that blinking light is the worst feeling, isn't it? I had the exact same thing happen with an old Linksys router. Just sat there blinking like it was mocking me. I finally just unplugged it and tossed the whole thing in the trash.

Blew up my own router trying to update it once, totally feel your pain.

That line about blowing up your router really hit home. I've never actually fried one that badly, but I came close once during a firmware update and the thing just bricked itself. It was sitting there blinking like a sad little Christmas light and I had no idea what to do. Ended up having to get a new one because the old one was completely dead. It's amazing how something as simple as an update can go so wrong so fast.
