Can we talk about how long it took me to get my rainwater system right?

I spent a solid 4 months trying to get my rainwater collection working without it turning into a mosquito farm. I thought just slapping a barrel under a downspout would be enough, but then my water went green and slimy. I tried bleach, I tried screens, even tried some fancy mesh from a gardening store. Turned out the real fix was adding a first flush diverter and a dark tank that blocks sunlight. It took me three different setups and a lot of wasted weekends to figure that out. Has anyone else spent way longer than expected on a simple off grid fix like this?

Funny you say that... I think you overcomplicated the whole thing. A dark tank and first flush diverter sound like add-ons that shouldn't have taken 4 months to figure out if you'd just read the basic instructions that come with a barrel. Mosquitoes are easy to stop with a simple screen and some bleach every now and then. Seems like you were chasing perfection instead of just getting the job done with what you had.

Right, because who needs perfection when you can have mosquito stew with a side of green sludge? Four months of "getting it right" sounds like a solid hobby to me.

...plus I hear mosquito protein is the next big superfood, so really I was just being ahead of the curve. But yeah, I get it. I could have done the whole thing in a weekend with a screen and some bleach and saved myself all that time. Instead I spent four months basically building a Rube Goldberg machine out of PVC and old buckets. The worst part is I ended up adding more stuff than I needed just because I was bored and kept finding "improvements" online. It works fine now but I could have gotten the same result with a trip to the hardware store and an afternoon. Lesson learned, maybe. Probably not though.
