The time a guy tried to trade me cigarettes for my ankle monitor charger at the bus station

I was picking up my brother from the Greyhound in Tulsa last Tuesday and this dude in the waiting area walks up and offers me a half-empty pack of Marlboros for the charging cord sticking out of my bag. Turns out he was on parole and his monitor was about to die, he had no way to charge it. I just gave him the cord and pointed him to an outlet, but it really got me thinking about how many people end up in technical violation over something as dumb as a dead battery.

A buddy of mine tried selling one of those last fall. Had it listed for like three weeks with no bites at all. Finally somebody offered him fifteen bucks and he just took it to get it out of his garage. Funny how things that seem cool at the time end up being such a pain to deal with later.

I read a piece a while back about how many people on parole actually miss check-ins because of dead monitors. It's wild that something so simple can land someone back in jail for a technical violation. The guy at the bus stop probably wasn't trying to be shady, he was just desperate not to get locked up again for something that dumb. Makes you wonder how often that kind of thing happens and nobody even talks about it.
