Old ham radio guy told me to use a pizza pan as a dish reflector... actually works

Met this retiree at the junk yard last fall, he pointed at a beat up pizza pan and said 'that'll pull in AMC 9 no problem.' I laughed but threw it on my mount anyway. Been getting 23 channels steady for 6 months now including some weather data feeds. Anyone else ever try random metal objects as reflectors?

Read somewhere that NASA actually used a pizza pan shaped reflector on one of their early weather satellites back in the 60s, like a real prototype test thing. So it's not just some random junk yard hack, there's actual engineering history behind the idea. The old ham guys probably knew that story or figured it out on their own, because they're always digging up weird old tech tricks. Makes me wonder what else I've been ignoring at the scrapyard that could be a hidden antenna gem.

I spent 20 years as a broadcast engineer and I can tell you the principle is sound. A pizza pan is basically a shallow parabolic dish, and at 12 GHz for Ku band satellite signals, even a rough curve can focus enough energy to make a difference. The key is the focal point distance, which most people get wrong when they try random metal objects. I checked the math on a 14 inch pizza pan once, and the focal point ends up being about 3 inches from the surface depending on the curve. That retiree likely knew exactly what he was doing because older ham guys understand wave physics better than most modern techs.
