Actually that's a pretty common approach in high end design. They might mean three base colors but then use different shades and tones of those. Like a navy, cream, and rust color story could have twenty different fabrics that all read as those three colors from a distance.

Wait, twenty fabrics for just three colors? That seems like overkill to me. How do you even keep track of all those samples without the whole room looking messy?
