Remember when we just eyeballed post hole depth?
Got called out by an inspector on a job in Tempe about 5 years ago. He said my 30 inch holes were more like 26. Started using a marked digging bar that same day. Now I check every single one, no guesswork. Anyone else have a simple tool that saved them from a dumb mistake?

Tell me about it. Getting called out like that sticks with you. I felt pretty dumb standing there while he measured. That marked bar became my best friend after that day. It just takes one time getting burned to learn the lesson for good. Now I don't even think about it, I just check.

That's a digging bar, not a post hole digger.

Honestly the real problem is when you ask someone to grab the post hole digger and they bring the bar. Now you're stuck with a skinny hole and no way to get the dirt out. Seen it happen on a fence job where the new guy mixed up the tools. Ended up having to widen every single hole by hand.

Over on my first fencing crew, the foreman painted the heads of all the digging bars bright orange and the post hole diggers bright green. That simple color code saved us loads of confusion and arguments. Once you do that, even the greenest hand can grab the right tool without a second thought.
