I was at the farmers market in Boise and saw a vendor using old pickle jars for kraut

They just drilled a hole in the lid for an airlock, which seems way cheaper than buying new gear. Has anyone else tried this with other jars?

Yeah, but that garlic oregano egg story is why I'd worry about the jar material itself. Some old glass can leach weird stuff into acidic ferments over time.

My buddy did that with salsa jars for kimchi, worked great.

Ever see someone try to pickle eggs in an old pasta sauce jar? My friend did that last year. He didn't clean the jar well enough, I guess. The whole batch tasted faintly like garlic and oregano, which was pretty weird with a hard boiled egg. He still ate them, but he learned his lesson about washing jars super good.
