Question about getting a sourdough starter going in a dry apartment
My place in Phoenix is super dry and my first two attempts at a starter just dried out and died after a couple days. I tried putting the jar inside a big plastic bag with a damp towel at the bottom, and that kept the humidity up enough for it to finally take off after about 5 days. Has anyone else found a good trick for this kind of dry air problem?

You live in Phoenix and bake bread?

My oven hits 450 degrees just to preheat, and it's already 110 outside. The idea of adding more heat to this house feels like a special kind of madness. I tried it once last July and my AC ran for six hours straight just to recover. How do people manage that here without melting?

Heard about a guy who used a big plastic tub with a lid for his starter (like a mini greenhouse).

Ever notice how we're all just trying to make life work in places that weren't really built for it?
