Saw a guy get canned for a dumb joke about his boss on Twitter

This happened at a supply house I work with in Austin. A guy posted a picture of his manager's messy desk with a joke about how it looked like a tornado hit it. He didn't tag the company, but someone saw it and showed the boss. They fired him the next day for 'unprofessional conduct.' I get it was dumb, but he was a good worker and it was just a joke between friends. Do you think that's a fair reason to lose your job? Has anyone seen something like that happen?

Wild. That's a harsh lesson but honestly, you gotta know nothing is private online. Even if he didn't tag the place, it's way too easy for stuff to get back. It sucks for him, but companies are super paranoid about their rep now. I'd be shocked if the handbook didn't cover this.

Wow, that seems way over the top. It was a dumb move to post it, sure, but firing him? For a joke about a messy desk? Feels like a warning would have been enough, especially if he was a good worker. Companies get so sensitive about their image now.

Check the employee handbook, it likely spells out social media policy violations.
