That $400 infrared thermometer gun I bought for our furnace inspections (love it or hate it?)
I swear by mine for catching hot spots on the ladle linings before they fail, but my partner says it's just a expensive toy and we should stick with the old thermocouple probes. Anyone else go digital with their temp checks or still keep it analog?

Partner's right on this one, those IR guns are just toys for show. Stick with the thermocouple probes for real work because they don't lie when you hit a hot spot on a lining. The laser can bounce off shiny surfaces or give you a false reading if you're not square on the target, but a probe is direct contact. Why trade something that works every time for a gadget that needs perfect conditions to be accurate?

Wait, don't thermocouples need to touch the exact spot too though?

Why would anyone trust a tool that needs perfect aim and clean surfaces when you could just touch the thing?
