Watching the new guy pour a small bronze piece last Thursday changed my whole grip on the ladle.
I've been holding the handle right at the end for years, thinking it gave me more control for the tilt. He was holding it closer to the ladle itself, almost like a shovel. I tried it on a pour for a set of four-inch gear blanks... my wrist didn't ache after, and the stream was way steadier. How many of you hold it closer in like that?

Yeah, the "wrist didn't ache" part is what got me. I switched to a grip like that after a long pour left my forearm in knots. It just feels more balanced, like you're guiding the weight instead of fighting it.

Wait, is a different grip really that big of a deal? I've been pouring concrete for years and never thought about it much... my wrist hurts sometimes but that's just part of the job. It seems like overthinking a simple task.

My old foreman showed me that grip in '08.

Seriously? You never tweaked your grip? I've seen guys get carpal tunnel so bad they had to switch trades. That old school pinch grip torques your wrist all day. Try holding the handle like you're shaking hands next pour. It puts the weight straight down your arm instead of twisting it. Makes a huge difference on those long foundation walls.
