That older gentleman at the Fullerton farmers market who gave me a lemon and a lesson
Back in 2018, I was at the farmers market on Wilshire and stopped at a small stall run by an older guy selling citrus. He handed me a lemon for free and said, "This tree is 40 years old, and it still gives me more than I need." That stuck with me more than any advice about gardening or buying local. I think about him every time I drive past that spot and see how much the area has changed since then. Anyone else have a random encounter with a local that felt like it meant something more?

Hang on, are we really gonna sit here and pretend a lemon and a bungee cord are the keys to the universe? Feels like we're reading a little too deep into a guy just selling his fruit or holding his car together.

Oh man, that story reminds me of this guy I ran into at a gas station in Santa Ana like ten years ago. He was trying to fix his own car with a bungee cord and duct tape, and I stopped to ask if he needed a hand. He waved me off and said, "Son, I've been fixing things wrong for 40 years, and they still get me where I'm going." That line has popped into my head so many times when I'm stressing over doing something perfect instead of just good enough. It's funny how these random strangers can drop a piece of wisdom on you when you're not even looking for it. I wonder if that old guy ever knew how much his dumb little comment about a bungee cord would stick with someone.
