Serious question about garage floor epoxy and why I changed my method

My buddy Mike told me I was wasting my time with the cheap roller-on epoxy kits from Home Depot. He said I needed to use a two-part polyaspartic coating instead, which cost me about $450 for my 2-car garage in Phoenix. I had been doing it wrong for years, just putting a thin coat down and wondering why it peeled up in 6 months. Has anyone else had better luck with the more expensive stuff or am I just getting hustled by the pro painters?

Nah, prep is everything. Even the cheap stuff sticks if you actually grind and clean right.

Phoenix sun is brutal on garage floors, that's for sure. The $450 polyaspartic is probably overkill for a residential garage in most cases. I've had good results with a two-part epoxy from a real paint store, not the big box stores, for about $200. The key is proper prep, not the price tag. You gotta etch the concrete and grind down any smooth spots or old paint first, otherwise even the expensive stuff will peel.

Gotta disagree a bit here, I've seen that $450 polyaspartic hold up way better than epoxy in direct sun over a few years. Epoxy can yellow or chalk up pretty quick if the UV isn't handled, and in Phoenix that's a real problem unless you park a car over it constantly.
