My art teacher told me my shading was making everything look muddy
She said I was pressing too hard and blending too much, so I switched to lighter pencil strokes and it totally changed how my drawings look. Anyone else get a critique that felt harsh but actually helped a ton?

Right on, phoenix_lewis nailed it. That advice about pressing too hard is classic. Once you get past the initial sting, you realize they were just trying to save you from smudging everything into a gray blob. Switching to lighter strokes is a game changer, lets you actually build up the dark areas instead of just smashing them in. It's wild how one little change about how much pressure you use can open up a whole new way of drawing.

Funny how a little thing like pressure can turn you from a frustrated mess into someone who actually feels like they know what they're doing. Kinda like the first time I tried to cook a steak and learned you don't have to beat it into submission with a spatula. That gray blob phase though. We've all been there, scribbling away like we're trying to erase the page itself. Now I just pretend my pencil is made of glass and it somehow works better. Amazing what happens when you stop fighting the paper and start listening to it.
