I used to think laser removal before coverups was a waste

I had this big black tribal band from 2006 on my forearm and wanted to cover it with a floral sleeve. My artist at Lucky 13 in Austin said I needed at least 3 laser sessions first and I was honestly pissed, thought he just wanted more money. But after 2 sessions the lines faded like 70% and the peonies he did over it actually look clean instead of muddy. Has anyone else had a coverup that needed multiple sessions to come out right?

Had 3 sessions on a solid black chest piece before my coverup. First session barely touched it, honestly thought the laser tech was scamming me too. By session 3 though it was light enough that the new artwork (a ship with some clouds) actually reads clearly. Your artist was right, lighter ink means they can work with more colors and fine lines.

Patience pays off. Three sessions is nothing for good ink.

Hold up, you're saying it took three sessions just to get it light enough?
